Emergency Supplies Needed in Haiti

By now you are all aware of the devastation in Haiti.  Dogtopia & All About Dogs are looking for ways to help and would like to invite you to participate.  There is an emergency, real-time need for Relief Supply Kits in Haiti and we are attempting to collect as many supplies as possible THIS WEEK!  We hope you’ll be able to bring supplies when you come this week or drop off items during the week! Please also consider sending this request to friends, family and co-workers who might want to help.

Health Kits for Haiti

Supply Kits help to care for the most vulnerable people during times of crisis. They also help to sustain everyday life by providing basic necessities to people who lack ready access to essential supplies. These kits provide vital support for the work the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is doing in Haiti. By donating kit supplies or financial gifts to purchase the supplies, you make a direct, tangible difference in sustaining people’s lives.

UMCOR, is the not-for-profit global humanitarian aid organization of the United Methodist Church. UMCOR is working in more than 80 countries worldwide, including Haiti. They are already in country and have a field office there so they have established relationships with the local population. 100% of donations to UMCOR go towards disaster relief efforts.

Due to the emergency of this situation, we need all items by Thursday, January 21st, 2010.

Items can be donated in two ways:

1. Drop off the individual items below (i.e. packs of soap, bandages, or combs, etc.)
2. Create completed kits with the quantities of each item listed below and placed in the gallon zip top bag. (If you choose to make kits, please do not include notes or any other items in the bags as they will be removed before shipping. This is due to strict international shipping regulations.)

All items must be new.

* 1 gallon zip top bag
* 1 hand towel (15″ x 25″ up to 17″ x 27″, No kitchen towels)
* 1 washcloth
* 1 comb (large and sturdy, not pocket-sized)
* 1 nail file or fingernail clippers (no emery boards or toenail clippers)
* 1 bath-size bar of soap (3 oz. and up)
* 1 toothbrush (single brushes only in original wrapper, No child-size brushes)
* 6 adhesive plastic strip sterile bandages
* $1.00 to purchase toothpaste (Please do not purchase the toothpaste. Due to the expiring nature of toothpaste, it is purchased by UMCOR at the time of final shipment)

On Friday, January 22nd, we will be packing the kits for shipment January 23rd-24th.

In the News!

November 27th, 2009 by Zeke

My mom (Amber) was on DC’s Channel 9 news on Wednesday November 25th.  She was giving other dog owners tips on how to keep their animals safe during the holidays.  I almost got to be on TV too, but they filmed in the kitchen and it didn’t make sense for me to hang out in the kitchen.  Oh well, maybe next time!  In the meantime, check out my mom:

ROAR! Look at me! I’m a dinosaur! (That’s my friend, Lily Anne!)

Zeke as Lil Stinker

Peeee-yoooo! Is that a skunk I smell?
(Okay, maybe this costume is just an excuse for me to be unexcusably flatulent for one night of the year. Oh, who am I kidding? I’m unexcusably flatulent every night of the year.)

Zeke as Turtle

Here, liiizard liiizard liiiizard!

Lily Anne and I were recruited to help my mom out by modeling a few of the Halloween costumes that we have here at Dogtopia.  It wasn’t as much fun as I thought it would be when I volunteered, but hey, hopefully someone will get a laugh out of it!  Don’t forget to get a costume for your dog and enter our Howl-O-Ween costume contest!!

October 4th, 2009 by Zeke

Goldens 09212009The new Fall season blew a whole slew of Golden Retrievers into Dogtopia of Woodbridge!  I told my mom she had to get a photo of them and show everyone how cute they looked all together!  Can you tell which Golden is Which?  Alphabetically we have Duke W., Pudge, Sidney & Teddy.  Take a guess!

We met our goal!

July 22nd, 2009 by Zeke

On Sunday we hosted a dog washing fundraiser to benefit the Prince William County K-9 Unit and it was a huge success! We met our goal of washing 50 dogs and raised over $1,000! A huge thank you to everyone who participated!

Misunderstood Pitbull Rescue and All About Dogs were there to hang out with us. We had a bake sale with homemade doggy biscuits and human treats – yum! And of course, there was a lot of dog washing going on! (Somehow I managed to escape the tub – I think my mom was too busy greeting all of her guests that she forgot to bathe me! Score!)

Here are some photos from the event:

We have our usual end of the month playgroup sessions this Sunday (big dogs/high energy 11 am-1 pm, small dogs/low energy 1-3 pm). For more information, give us a call at 703-497-1893 or stop by our website and click on the calendar of doggy events! We hope to see you then!

I’m still here!

Hey Zeke - are you working hard or hardly working?

Hey Zeke - are you working hard or hardly working?

Okay, okay, so I haven’t blogged in a long time – I’m sorry!
I was so busy sniffing all the fun new scents that spring ushered in that I lost track of time!

The weather is sunny and warm these days so we have reopened our outdoor play area here at Dogtopia of Woodbridge. We like to go out in the mornings before it gets too hot outside. I personlly don’t care for the kiddie pool (I get wet often enough from being bathed in the Spa Room, thank you very much) but the Labs and Goldens seem to enjoy that quite a bit!

Today we had nearly two dozens dogs running around our Gym. Dogs of all sizes, all colors (well not ALL colors, I have yet to see a green dog, but then again, I’m sort of color blind, so you never know.) There was a Great Dane-Lab mix (he’s hugemongous!) named Granite who sprawled out on the floor, begging for his belly to be rubbed – and he would lay right next to Winston, a tiny 12-week old Welsh corgi puppy! It was adorable!

Cali, a Vizsla and this week’s Dog of the Week, showed up to play this morning and I think she definitely knew that she was being honored this week! She ran around the Gym, all the dogs following her, and you could almost hear her thoughts: “The Dog of the Week is here! The Dog of the Week is here!” That girl has so much energy, just watching her run around and play made me feel exhausted!

Sidney (a Golden Retriever) and Oscar (a hound) asked the staff to throw a ball for them over and over and over and over and, well, you get the picture. I wonder if there’s a world record for number of ball retrievals… I bet if they could write Santa a letter, both Sidney and Oscar would ask for one of those machines that shoots out tennis balls automatically. They could be kept occupied for hours! Days! Weeks at a time!

Tara, a chocolate Labrador Retriever who comes to play with us every week, was extra playful today! Everyone was getting along very well –  it was a really fun day for everyone, staff and pups alike.
