Laddie Boy Harding

We may be a day late, but in honor of President’s Day we thought we’d feature some fun facts and a great little photo essay from Time.com on what else? Dogs would called The White House home.

Even if you disagree with a particular President’s politics or policies, there’s something about seeing them with their best furry friend that just makes you say “Awww”.

Fun Facts Snapshot:

  • George Washington was a big fan of the Foxhound. He referenced 30 different ones in his writing! These hounds eventually became known as the American Foxhound.
  • Buddy Clinton

Lincoln owned a dog prior to becoming President named Fido. Genius President… maybe not so good with the names. :) Apparently Lincoln was concerned the trip to Washington from Illinois would be too much for Fido so they allowed him to stay in Illinois. After the assassination and Lincoln’s return to Springfield, Fido was there to greet mourners. No limits on a dog’s love.

  • Though he wasn’t reported to be a big dog lover himself, Truman is attributed with this quote: “If you want to have a friend in Washington, you should buy a dog.”
  • Herbert Hoover kept may have had the first unofficial dog daycare. He and his wife were parents to a German Shepherd Dog named King Tut (cute!), an Elkhound, an Irish Wolfhound and two Fox Terriers!

A Happy Holiday for K9 Support

Holiday donations for K9 Support

Donations for K9 Support in White Flint's lobby

Even after 3 1/2 years we are still touched by the outpouring of generosity we see whenever a drive is held for K9 Support.

Despite economic woes and the fact that belts are tightening all over, the donations came rolling in once again this holiday season. Tennis balls, chew toys, treats, shampoo and goodies for the handlers as well.

In addition to the donations dropped off by our awesome customers, we received over $2,000 in monetary donations after a piece aired on CNN featuring our charitable efforts. Check out that piece here. These donations will be used to purchase items for the packages. We have access to wholesale pricing that makes the dollar go much further! This will also help defer shipping costs, because transport from D.C. to Baghdad isn’t cheap! :)

More shipments will go out soon and we’ll be sure to keep you updated!

Since they can’t be home for the holidays…

… we’re doing our best to send a little bit of home to our brave K9 Handlers and their dogs overseas.

K9 Support is holding its annual Holiday charity drive! A collection box has been set-up in the lobby, so please consider making a donation to add to our seasonal care packages.

The feedback we receive from the troops is amazingly touching. They are so grateful to receive some of the niceties we take for granted and are very thankful. Our attitude the past 3 1/2 years we’ve been doing this is that we only wish we could do more!

While the economy has dominated headlines we just hope to remind everyone that they are still over there, sacrificing every day and we want them to know they are not forgotten this time of year.

Check out the list of requested items below. Every donation is appreciated and nothing is too small. :) If you’d like to print out a copy to share with others at work or school, please see the printable PDF version here.

Visit K9 Support, Inc online. If you cannot visit our location, but would still like to help, please consider making a monetary donation on the website. 100% of proceeds go towards purchasing items for the care packages and shipping costs.

Our K9 Support charity has been one of the most rewarding things about working at Dogtopia for 3 1/2 years now.

Its mission is to create awareness and support for K9 Handlers and their dogs working overseas. In particular we hold fundraisers (our annual dog wash being the biggest!) through-out the year to raise funds for care packages. Sending a box full of goodies for human and canine seems like the smallest “thank you” we can offer when they are facing some of the most dangerous conditions in the world each day.

We were thrilled to see this story on a brand new, 15 million dollar facility built on Lackland Air Force Base to treat combat-wounded working dogs. We could all point to things in the federal spending budget that may raise an eyebrow, but taking care of the dogs that risk their lives to protect our troops definitely isn’t one of them. It’s great to see the military feels the same way.
