All Hail Layla!

Monday, August 30th, 2010

We received dozens of entries to our “King or Queen for a Day Contest” – an awesome response! We were so thrilled to read how much you loved your dogs and what made them special to you!

After careful consideration, a seven month old Beagle Mix named Layla was chosen as our Queen for the Day! She will be treated to a day of play with her loyal furry subjects and a trip to the royal spa for pampering, followed by a str0ll around the boutique to select the best doggie amusements. Read Layla’s tale below.

Queen Layla

Layla’s royal canine court includes Wendy the Puggle as Court Jester, who always keeps us smiling and Skylar the Boston Terrier as our Duchess of Ashburn! Doesn’t she just look regal??

Thank you again for the wonderful entries. It’s clear that every Dogtopia dog is lucky to have such loving parents and they are all royal in their own rights!

Queen Layla’s “Tail” as told by her Mom Christine

Layla should be queen of Dogtopia for a day. She is a seven month old beagle mix, she has a sparkle in her eyes and a smile on her face. She wasnt always such a happy girl. Layla had a rough start to life. Her first owner gave Layla and her brother to a kill shelter in rural Virginia. Her brother had parvo but Layla luckily was able to avert any sickness from her first home. From her shelter she moved to a foster home with a rescue group in rural Virginia. After they had had Layla for three months, they could no longer care for her and moved her up to a rescue group in Northern Virginia, into yet another foster home.

When I went to meet the dogs at the adoption day, Layla and her brother caught my eye. After spending time with Layla and her brother, I knew there was something special. I found out that her brother was adopted that day and Layla was going to be all alone. That’s when I decided she was the one for me. I took her home two weeks later and it was a hard adjustment. She was shy with me, scared of dogs and scared of any strangers. It took weeks of socialization and getting her into a routine for her to come out of her shell. Now she LOVES playing with dogs at the dog park and saying hello to people on her walks. I think she has finally realized that she has a home for good and all she has to do is be one good puppy! I couldn’t imagine having any other dog. She is smart, playful and has the best little freckles on her snout :) Her story of being rehomed and rehomed has a happy ending and Layla isn’t going anywhere. She may have had been in 5 new places with new people in the first 6 months of her life but she now has one true forever home.

Layla deserves to be queen as she is the rags to riches story.

And we couldn’t agree more. All Hail Queen Layla! :)

Just a day after the Inauguration, Barney and Miss Beazley are out, but who’s in?

Joe Biden and Champ (www.daylife.com

The new first family is settling into their White House digs, but everyone is still eagerly awaiting the introduction of the new first dog.

Vice-President Biden didn’t keep us guessing. He quickly chose an adorable German Shepherd puppy to accompany him and his family to Washington. He later named him Champ.

From Obama’s famous assurance during his acceptance speech to his daughters that they had “earned the new puppy coming with them to the White House” to recent news that they’ve narrowed the choice down to a Labradoodle or a Portuguese Water Dog – America seems fascinated by the selection process. Almost as much as the election itself!

The American Kennel Club wrote a letter to the Obamas with a short-list of breeds they thought would suit the family. They also established www.presidentialpup.com where you could vote for your choice. After 42,000 votes were cast, the Poodle won out.

Petitions, emails and entire websites were devoted to encouraging they adopt a dog from a shelter or rescue organization. The popular animal rescue, Best Friends Network, has one of the most popular sites – www.obamafamilydog.com.

Being staunch supporters of dog adoption, we’d LOVE to see them visit a local shelter and pick out the pup of their dreams, but what to name the luckiest dog this side of the Potomac?

Our clients are some of the most creative people around when it comes to clever dog names as I documented in the recent post “What’s in a name?” .

So we ask you, the awesome and creative clients of Dogtopia of Tyson’s Corner -what are your name suggestions?

Submit your best selection via the comments section here (remember to include an email) before Friday, the 30th and our favorites will be rewarded with cash and prizes!!

Okay NOT cash, but we will give a cool Dogtopia prize. :)

Check the blog? Save a little $$$

Check the blog? Save a little $$$

Launching our blog has been a great experience and in 2009 we have BIG plans for it!

Not only will we continue to share interesting doggie tidbits we find around the web and good times here at the daycare, but we also want to make this a fun, interactive forum for all of you who support Dogtopia!

In an email earlier this week, we shared that contests, one-day specials and events will be exclusively announced right here on the Dogtopia of Tysons Corner blog! We have lots of fun ideas that will keep you engaged with us and also help you save a little money along the way.

If you’re not signed up for our email list, click this link to do so! The last email contained a contest and the first 5 respondents received a gift certificate for their next visit with us.

Make sure you never miss an update by signing up for our RSS feed. You can choose to receive new posts right on your Google, Yahoo or Bloglines homepage!
