Who doesn’t love chocolate?

Friday, January 30th, 2009

As we continue our Breed Day good times… Tuesday, February 10th we’ll have a very special Breed Day!

In honor of Valentine’s Day – all mocha, caramel, chocolate and just plain brown dogs will get a special play session, we’ll snap some pictures and everyone will go home with a fun photo collage of the day.

We’ll even post the photo to the website’s photo gallery afterwards.

Snow Day!

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Some of the dogs were simply made for this weather…

It was Hudsons day to shine!

It was Hudson's day to shine!

Even those with less fur enjoyed digging the scene…

Trudy had some fun!

Some paused just long enough for us to snap a pic…

Lily is enjoying her very first day of daycare today and Bella had her fun yesterday.

We look forward to lots of fun with these two! Welcome to Dogtopia!!

Support the Reston Dog Park!

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

With Fairfax County facing a budget shortfall that would run into the hundreds of millions (ouch!) and mean lots of cutbacks, we were concerned our favorite dog parks might be adversely affected. So we reached out to learn how we could help. Did they need waste bags? Toys? Bowls? We didn’t know.

We soon heard back from the wonderful folks who make up RestonDogs, the organization responsible for the Off-Leash Dog Park at Baron Cameron Park… most commonly known as The Reston Dog Park. They wanted to encourage everyone who uses and loves the park to become an actual member. The yearly fee is only $20 and proceeds help maintain the park. They were also looking for ways to raise funds in general, as they hoped to add a new water source to the park and some new landscaping in the future.

With that in mind, we’re having our first ever Bark for your Park fundraiser with RestonDogs!

Into February, each new member of the dog park will receive a $15 gift certificate good towards services at Dogtopia of Tyson’s Corner and we will happily donate $25 to the park’s treasury for every new customer we receive that references the dog park as how they heard about us!

The effort has already received press attention – with articles in the Fairfax County Times and Reston Observer.

Let’s play the name game!

Just a day after the Inauguration, Barney and Miss Beazley are out, but who’s in?

Joe Biden and Champ (

Joe Biden and Champ (

The new first family is settling into their White House digs, but everyone is still eagerly awaiting the introduction of the new first dog.

Vice-President Biden didn’t keep us guessing. He quickly chose an adorable German Shepherd puppy to accompany him and his family to Washington. He later named him Champ.

From Obama’s famous assurance during his acceptance speech to his daughters that they had “earned the new puppy coming with them to the White House” to recent news that they’ve narrowed the choice down to a Labradoodle or a Portuguese Water Dog – America seems fascinated by the selection process. Almost as much as the election itself!

The American Kennel Club wrote a letter to the Obamas with a short-list of breeds they thought would suit the family. They also established where you could vote for your choice. After 42,000 votes were cast, the Poodle won out.

Petitions, emails and entire websites were devoted to encouraging they adopt a dog from a shelter or rescue organization. The popular animal rescue, Best Friends Network, has one of the most popular sites –

Being staunch supporters of dog adoption, we’d LOVE to see them visit a local shelter and pick out the pup of their dreams, but what to name the luckiest dog this side of the Potomac?

Our clients are some of the most creative people around when it comes to clever dog names as I documented in the recent post “What’s in a name?” .

So we ask you, the awesome and creative clients of Dogtopia of Tyson’s Corner -what are your name suggestions?

Submit your best selection via the comments section here (remember to include an email) before Friday, the 30th and our favorites will be rewarded with cash and prizes!!

Okay NOT cash, but we will give a cool Dogtopia prize. :)

Why we love… Muffin!

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Muffin Stewart is a beautiful Labradoodle who plays with us a few times a week!

Why we love Miss Muffin…

1. Her birthday was the 5th of this month. She turned 4, but doesn’t look a day over 2.

2. Being a Doodle, she represents the best of both worlds… she’s fun and playful, but also has a dignified air about her.

3. Her coat is so fluffy you can’t help but want to hug her!

4. She always has a “Hey!! Happy to meet you! Hey! Let’s play! Hey! Are we going to play?” smile on her face. She was quite the star at our recent Yankee Doodle Breed Day

5. The name Muffin – how cute is it??

Why we love… Darby!

Miss Darby

Miss Darby

This will be the first entry in a series of blogs we will affectionate call “Why we love…”

Each blog will feature a pup we just can’t get enough of here at Dogtopia of Tysons Corner!

Meet Darby!!

Darby is an absolutely adorable 1 year old Chocolate Lab who visits us virtually every day for a good time.

Why she’s so awesome:

Pensive Darby

Pensive Darby

1. She’s been attending daycare since she was a cute, floppy puppy.

2. She’s still really cute.

3. Look at those eyes!

4. When hanging out in The Lounge she enjoys playing, but is also a casual observer. Surveying the room and kind of digging the scene.

5. You can never have enough Chocolate Labs!

Launching our blog has been a great experience and in 2009 we have BIG plans for it!

Not only will we continue to share interesting doggie tidbits we find around the web and good times here at the daycare, but we also want to make this a fun, interactive forum for all of you who support Dogtopia!

In an email earlier this week, we shared that contests, one-day specials and events will be exclusively announced right here on the Dogtopia of Tysons Corner blog! We have lots of fun ideas that will keep you engaged with us and also help you save a little money along the way.

If you’re not signed up for our email list, click this link to do so! The last email contained a contest and the first 5 respondents received a gift certificate for their next visit with us.

Make sure you never miss an update by signing up for our RSS feed. You can choose to receive new posts right on your Google, Yahoo or Bloglines homepage!

What’s in a name?

Mr. Chubbs the English Mastiff

Mr. Chubbs the English Mastiff

Our customers have been pretty creative when it comes to name their dogs. Some of my favorites include, Tivo, Mr. Chubbs, Muffin, ESPN and Firetruck. I also really enjoy the human names like Michael and Bob. Who wouldn’t love a dog named Bob?

From comes a list of 2008’s most popular and most unsual dog and cat names of 2008.

Not surprisingly, Max still tops the most popular list – along with Maggie, Bailey and Buddy.

Most unusual honors? Rush Limbark. :) Low Jack and Peanut Wigglebutt made the list as well.
